Things to Remember

  • Not every county offers every service
  • Most of these programs are for adults aged 60 and over, regardless of ability or income
  • You can contribute to the cost of the services you or a loved one receives

Adult Day Care & Health Services

Adult day care services support independence by enhancing their social, physical and emotional well-being. Generally, the program provides a nutritious meal, activities and snacks in a group setting. To join, you must undergo medical examinations for admission and periodically afterward.

Adult day health services provide healthcare services to people who need more hands-on care. Services must be offered in a certified home or center that meets state standards for such programs.

Caregiver Support Program

The caregiver support program seeks to reduce the stress of caregiving by providing respite, care management and supplemental assistance.

Group Meals

Congregate nutrition provides a hot meal in a social setting. It is more than a meal model, which offers participants 1/3 of the daily recommended dietary allowance requirement for nutrition and is typically prepared by a food catering service. Congregate sites, such as senior centers, churches and community centers, are available in all nine counties, and sometimes with available transportation.

Health and Wellness

We provide evidence-based classes on managing chronic illnesses such as arthritis, heart disease and diabetes.

Home-Delivered Meals

Home-delivered meals provide a nutritious meal delivered right to the doorstep for people who can’t leave their homes without significant effort due to physical or mental limitations.

Housing & Home Improvement

This service provides minor home repairs and modifications, such as ramps and grab bars, to those eligible. Currently, Cabarrus County is the only county in the region that offers this service.

Information & Options Counseling

North Carolina’s service system can be complex and confusing for many people. Each county has designated leaders who help people assess their specific needs, identify suitable services and find appropriate payment sources to connect the person with the right service.

In-Home Aide

Two types of in-home aide programs help people avoid needing a long-term care facility.

  • Home Management: People who need help with tasks such as cooking, laundry, light housekeeping and shopping might receive home management.
  • Personal Care Services: Personal care is more extensive and complex. Provided by a certified nurse aide employed through a licensed home care agency, services considered personal care can include help with bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding and ambulation.

Legal Assistance

Two funded partners provide legal assistance:

  • N.C. Legal Aid provides services through the Senior Law Project, which serves Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties
  • Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy serves Mecklenburg County

Senior Centers

Senior centers are community focal points for social, emotional, health and financial support.

Transportation

Specially equipped vans/buses are used in senior transportation services. These vehicles provide trips to and/or from community resources such as the doctor’s office, dialysis centers, nutrition sites or other locations to help people access necessary services or engage in activities for daily living. Transportation services are available for people 60 and older who need the service.
